What is POS system?

A POS system, point of sale (POS) or point of purchase (POP) is the time and place where a purchase or transaction is made in a retail business. For example, in the store, the cashier calculates the amount of the customer’s purchase, shows that amount to the customer. It may also provide the customer with an invoice (which may be printed) and show the customer’s options for payment.

Pre-1990s systems

Early electronic cash registers (ECRs) were controlled by proprietary software and were limited in functionality and communication capabilities. In August 1973, IBM introduced the IBM3650 and 3660 Store Systems, which were essentially a computer used as a store controller that could control up to 128 IBM point-of-sale registers.

This system was the first commercial use of client server technology, peer-to-peer communication, simultaneous local area network (LAN) backup, and remote initialization. By mid-1974, the system was installed in Pathmark stores in New Jersey and Dillard’s department stores.

Modern systems (after 1990s)

Today, a wide variety of POS applications have been developed on operating systems such as Windows. The existence of fast and local processing power, data storage, network and graphical user interface has enabled the creation of flexible and highly functional POS systems, and the cost of these systems has also decreased. In 1993, IBM released FlexOS2.32 as the basis of the IBM 4690 operating system in its 469x series of POS terminals.

The product was in development until 2014, when it was sold to Toshiba, so that it could continue to be supported until at least 2017. As far as the computer is concerned, the out-of-the-box versions are usually newer and therefore more powerful than dedicated POS terminals, allowing for custom modifications if needed. Other products such as touch tablets and laptops are readily available on the market and are more portable than traditional POS terminals.
